A recent clinical study confirms that Efamol
® Evening Primrose Oil improves skin structure and function following irritation by detergent.
Study Design – Randomized, double-blind, placebo controlled, parallel trial. The trial included 40 males and females between 32 and 60 years of age which were clinically healthy and were self-assessed to have dry and rough skin. At the start of the trial, experimental skin irritation was induced by applying a strong detergent [(sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS)] to the skin test area on the inner side of both forearms. After 24 hours of exposure, the skin in these locations was cleaned and various tests to assess biomechanical properties of the skin were completed. Following initial testing, subjects were randomly assigned to take either six 500 mg capsules per day of Efamol
® Evening Primrose Oil (EPO) or an inert placebo for 84 days. Skin tests were repeated after supplementation. During the course of the study, neither the participants nor the clinicians monitoring the trial were aware of which treatment was being taken by each individual, thereby ensuring the results obtained were unbiased.
Clinical Assessments The following baseline skin measurements were taken at 0 time, 4 hours and one day after skin cleaning with detergent: moisture, trans epidermal water loss (TEWL) which is the rate at which water escapes from the body, elasticity, firmness, fatigue resistance, and roughness. The same tests were repeated on days 28 and 84. The baseline results of the two treatment groups were compared to confirm they were not significantly different from one another as any variation could impact on interpretation of results following treatment. The results obtained in the middle and the end of the study were compared to those obtained prior to treatment with either Efamol
® EPO or the inert placebo. Any skin improvements noted in the group taking Efamol
® EPO that were not also present in participants taking the placebo were attributed to the Efamol
® Evening Primrose Oil supplementation.
Results After 84 days of treatment with Efamol
® EPO, there was a statistically significant improvement in skin moisture, TEWL, roughness, firmness and fatigue resistance. Improvements in elasticity were nearly significant. These same improvements although apparent, were only significant for moisture and TEWL following only 28 days of treatment. This delay in response highlights the need to allow time for Efamol
® EPO to work. There was no improvement in any of these parameters following 84 days of treatment with placebo. There was no significant reduction in redness from the start (baseline) of the study to the end in either the Efamol
® EPO or the placebo group.
The following table shows the percentage mean improvement relative to placebo for all skin assessments following 84 days of treatment with Efamol
® Evening Primrose Oil.

Conclusion Efamol
® Evening Primrose Oil supplementation can repair and enhance the structure and function of irritated skin through improving its moisture content and retention, elasticity, firmness, strength and smoothness. These improvements aid in healing of damaged skin and may reduce the impact of further irritation thereby maintaining skin health.
